For a different view of the landscape, discuss a guided walk at nearby Pidurangala. The upper section involves uneven rock and scrambling, so it will not suit everyone.
Combine your stay with the painted caves and Buddha statues of Dambulla. Wear clothing covering shoulders and knees and follow temple etiquette.
Slow down for rural scenery, local food and quieter roads around the cultural triangle. Tell us whether you prefer history, photography or a relaxed drive.

Start early at Sigiriya, allow time to recover over lunch, and choose either Dambulla or a gentle afternoon in the surrounding countryside.
